Michael Oellerich, MD, Hon MD, FACB, FAMM, FFPath (RCPI), FRCPath, is a chemical pathologist and a Distinguished Research Professor of Clinical Chemistry at the Department of Clinical Pharmacology, Medical Faculty (UMG) of the Georg-August-University Göttingen, Germany. From 2012 to 2017, he served as a Lower Saxony Distinguished Professor of Clinical Chemistry at UMG. He was Chairman/Professor, Department of Clinical Chemistry/Central Laboratory at UMG, from 1991 to 2012. In 2013, he became a member of the Medical Advisory Board of Chronix Biomedical Inc., San Jose, CA, USA, and in 2017 Chief Research Officer (CRO) of the Liquid Biopsy Center GmbH, Göttingen, Germany. From 1996 to 1998, he was Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and from 1999 to 2004 Deputy of the Chief Executive for Research and Teaching on the executive board for the Medical Center and Faculty of Medicine. He was President of the International Association of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring and Clinical Toxicology (IATDMCT) (1997 to 1999), of the German Association for Laboratory Medicine (2001 to 2002), of the German Association for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (DGKL) (2003 to 2005), and of the World Association of Societies of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (WASPaLM) from 2009 to 2011. From 2013 to 2017, he was Director-Europe of WASPaLM. Since 2016, he is Secretary of the International Society of Enzymology. He is a member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and Art (BASA). Since 2003, he is Editor-in-Chief of the journal Therapeutic Drug Monitoring. He was Associate Editor of both Clinical Biochemistry (1996 to 2007) and Clinical Chemistry (2007 to 2013). His current research interests are in the field of therapeutic drug monitoring, with particular focus on molecular biomarkers to achieve personalised immunosuppression in transplantation (e.g.graft-derived circulating cell-free DNA) as well as genotype-directed cancer care using cfDNA. He has authored more than 460 publications (scientific journal articles, book chapters, books edited). International scholarly activities include External Examiner for the Second Professional Examination 2009/2010 of the Faculty of Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He received various awards: Ludolf-Krehl prize of the S.W. German Society for Internal Medicine in 1971, the IATDMCT Award, Cairns (Australia) 1999, the IATDMCT Charles Pippenger Award for Outstanding Contributions to Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, Washington (USA) 2001, the 2002 Canadian Society of Clinical Chemists Travelling Lectureship Award, the Perth PathCentre Visiting Lectureship, Western Australia 2004, the Professor-Landbeck Award, Hamburg (Germany) 2004, the WASPaLM Medal of Honor, Las Vegas (USA) 2011, and the WASPaLM Gold Headed Cane, Quebec City (Canada) 2013.
